Idea

Wormscope is a proposed new generation of small automated endoscopic devices designed to improve gastrointestinal examination by using a movement mechanism inspired by natural worm locomotion. The concept focuses on replacing or upgrading conventional endoscopes, which are often associated with discomfort, technical difficulty, and procedural risks. By leveraging advances in modern technology and miniaturization, the device aims to transform gastrointestinal diagnostics into a safer, easier, and more efficient procedure for both patients and healthcare providers.

Challenge

Wormscope is designed to address several limitations of conventional endoscopy, including high procedure costs, patient pain, complicated device handling, and risks such as looping, trauma, bleeding, or perforation. Traditional endoscopy also requires extensive operator training, sedation or anesthesia in many cases, and expensive equipment. By offering a smaller, automated, and potentially more affordable alternative that can examine the entire gastrointestinal tract, the Wormscope aims to expand access to screening especially for colorectal cancer while improving safety, comfort, and efficiency in gastrointestinal diagnostics.

Solution

Wormscope is an innovative medical device that navigates the gastrointestinal tract through a peristaltic, worm-like motion, allowing it to move smoothly and safely through the digestive system. The system includes two main versions: the Interventional Wormscope for performing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, and the Portable Diagnostic Wormscope (PDW), a simplified device that can connect to smartphones, tablets, or computers for quick examinations. The technology is designed to provide improved visualization, reduced patient discomfort, easier operation for clinicians, and potential integration with artificial intelligence for self-guidance and remote endoscopy capabilities.
