Idea

Tropical Research and Conservation Centre (TRCC) is pioneering a large-scale agroforestry initiative aimed at planting 10 million trees with Nigerian farming communities over the next 3–5 years. The project is designed to integrate high-value cash crops and fruit trees with arable crops, helping farmers transition to sustainable food-production systems while restoring productivity on degraded lands. By establishing long-term land-use agreements, the project ensures continuity, environmental restoration, and enduring economic benefits for participating households.

Challenge

Tropical Research and Conservation Centre (TRCC) is tackling critical agricultural and environmental challenges such as severe land degradation, declining soil fertility, biodiversity loss, and climate vulnerability among smallholder farmers. Through agroforestry practices—including alley cropping, multi-storey systems, and hedgerows—the project rehabilitates degraded lands, enhances ecosystem services, stabilizes farmer income, and increases resilience against climate risks. This intervention directly addresses food insecurity, rural poverty, and the urgent need for climate-smart agricultural systems across Nigeria.

Solution

Tropical Research and Conservation Centre (TRCC) is implementing a comprehensive agroforestry model that provides farmers with training, quality seedlings, scientific planting plans, and ongoing technical support from land preparation to harvest. The initiative will be registered under an accredited carbon standard, enabling the generation of carbon credits that supplement income from farm produce. This integrated solution creates a financially sustainable system supported by a repayment model for investors, while delivering job creation, improved food security, and long-term livelihood enhancement.
