The Onandjo Fish Farming Project (OFFP) is a community-based freshwater aquaculture initiative located in Onandjo Village, Omusati Region, Namibia. The project is designed as a sustainable and scalable response to two of the country’s most urgent needs—food security and employment creation. By leveraging aquaculture, OFFP aims to provide a consistent local supply of affordable, high-quality fish while creating meaningful job opportunities for youth and rural households. In doing so, the project directly supports Namibia’s national goals for agricultural self-sufficiency and rural economic development.

Challenge

The Onandjo Fish Farming Project (OFFP) is addressing Namibia’s pressing challenges of widespread food insecurity and high unemployment, particularly in rural areas. Nearly half of Namibia’s population faces food shortages, while 37% remain unemployed, with youth disproportionately affected. Inland regions also struggle with limited access to affordable protein due to reliance on marine exports and fragmented distribution networks. OFFP tackles these barriers by decentralizing fish supply, reducing prices, creating local jobs, and building capacity in aquaculture. By filling gaps left by existing government fish farms, OFFP provides a reliable, community-driven solution to hunger, malnutrition, and poverty.

The Onandjo Fish Farming Project (OFFP) is the solution to food insecurity and rural unemployment through a holistic, community-centered aquaculture model. By producing tilapia and catfish in purpose-built ponds, the project will supply nutritious fish to households, markets, and public institutions such as schools and clinics.
