Idea

Social Entrepreneurship for Development Company (SE4D) aims to empower approximately 2 million households in Tanzania, addressing the energy needs of over 90% of the population who rely on wood charcoal and firewood. The company will create sustainable livelihoods by providing jobs to over 6,000 youth and more than 32,000 marginalized individuals, particularly women, through the sale of alternative charcoal and clean cooking stoves. The project will be rolled out in phases, with the initial phase focusing on four regions: Dar es Salaam, Pwani, Mbeya, and Mwanza. SE4D plans to establish five production facilities in each district within these regions, impacting local communities and driving environmental, economic, and social change. The project's focus on women and youth addresses the difficulties they face in accessing energy and economic opportunities.

Challenge

The alternative charcoal market faces several challenges, including competition from other energy products like kerosene, LPG, and ethanol gels. SE4D's success depends on effective project management, cost control, and market adaptation. Additionally, risks such as fluctuations in international market prices, slow adoption in rural areas, and resistance from vested interest groups could pose barriers. SE4D’s response to these challenges includes a comprehensive management plan with clear communication, feasibility studies, and rigorous monitoring to mitigate risks. Furthermore, the project will focus on environmental sustainability by avoiding deforestation and carbon emissions. Financial projections indicate that the project is financially viable, with an initial investment of US$ 4.3 million, expected to generate US$ 49.8 million in profits over five years. Politically and socially, the project has strong support, with plans for collaboration with organizations like RUSEDO and NEMC to scale up and ensure successful implementation across Tanzania’s regions.

Solution

SE4D plans to revolutionize the energy sector by producing alternative charcoal and clean cooking stoves that are environmentally friendly and economically viable. The company will target three main market segments: household consumers, small-scale traders (e.g., Mamantilie), and medium-scale institutional customers (e.g., hotels, schools, prisons). Through a combination of public and private financing, the alternative charcoal project will compete with traditional charcoal and other energy alternatives such as LPG, kerosene, and biomass briquettes. SE4D aims to manage production efficiently with strong communications, cost-effectiveness, and sustainability, while addressing key challenges such as market competition and labor shortages. Despite these risks, SE4D’s strategy includes robust monitoring, evaluation, and documentation to ensure the project's longevity and success.
