Idea

Nalesh Holdings ("Nalesh") is a South African mining company that holds a prospecting right over the Tullochgorum and Torquay farms, located in the Douglas area of the Northern Cape. This mining right was granted in 2017 as a renewal of an earlier right awarded in 2009. Nalesh has entered into an exploration and mining agreement with Pico Diamonds (Pty) Ltd ("Piko"), a company with extensive experience in alluvial diamond mining. Based on the results of initial prospecting, which have shown moderate economic viability, Nalesh is now seeking to apply for a full mining right to further develop the project.

Challenge

Nalesh faces several challenges as it works to bring the Tullochgorum and Torquay project into full production. These include obtaining essential permits such as water and environmental management approvals, as well as ensuring compliance with local land use agreements. The land is owned by two farming families who currently use it for game hunting, which may present coordination challenges. In addition, Nalesh will need to meet the requirements set by South Africa’s black economic empowerment (BEE) policies and ensure adherence to environmental regulations, including rehabilitation efforts. These challenges must be effectively managed to ensure the successful development and operation of the project.

Solution

The Tullochgorum and Torquay project is strategically located along the middle Orange River, an area with a long history of alluvial diamond mining. The project covers a total of 5,160.9735 hectares and is situated in an established mining zone with access to both historical data and critical infrastructure. By transitioning from a prospecting right to a full mining right, Nalesh plans to develop a sustainable and profitable operation. The company will leverage the expertise of its partner, Piko, to maximize the potential of the site while adhering to all regulatory requirements for environmentally responsible mining.
