Idea

Michu E-Mid-Bus Transport and Trade PLC is a green mobility startup established to transform Ethiopia’s mass public transportation system by introducing electric mid-bus services. Founded to address severe public transport shortages and rising operational costs driven by fuel price volatility, the company’s core idea is to provide affordable, reliable, and environmentally sustainable transport services for urban and intercity passengers. By leveraging electric vehicle technology, Michu aims to build a modern, customer-focused transport network that supports economic activity while reducing carbon emissions.

Challenge

Michu E-Mid-Bus Transport and Trade PLC is addressing critical challenges in Ethiopia’s transport sector, including chronic bus shortages, unreliable and escalating fares, dependence on imported fossil fuels, and limited access to safe transportation particularly for rural communities, students, women, and emergency patients. Existing diesel-based transport systems suffer from high maintenance costs, pollution, and fragmented service quality. By introducing electric buses, the company tackles fuel cost instability, reduces greenhouse gas emissions, improves accessibility, and offers a scalable alternative to inefficient and unsafe transport practices currently affecting millions of Ethiopians.

Solution

Michu E-Mid-Bus Transport and Trade PLC is solving Ethiopia’s transport inefficiencies through the deployment of electric mid-buses supported by dedicated charging infrastructure. The company plans to initially operate 40 electric buses on high-demand routes such as Addis Ababa–Adama and gradually expand to additional corridors nationwide. Its solution combines lower operating costs, stable and fair passenger pricing, improved safety standards, trained personnel, and value-added services such as charter, school, and employee transportation. This integrated electric mobility model aligns with Ethiopia’s Climate-Resilient Green Economy strategy and the national Transport Master Plan 2050.
