Idea

Mazao Online is a transformative mobile application developed under the initiative of Sustainable Empowerment for Development Initiative (SEDI) Africa.

Mazao Online App is a mobile platform designed to support smallholder farmers in crop production, protection, and smart farming. Mazao is a Swahili name which means ‘‘crops’’. This is a profit-driven initiative designed to operate in Tanzania, with plans to expand to other African countries in the future. 

Information on best farming practices.
An online marketplace connecting farmers to retailers and input suppliers.
Access to crop advisory, soil testing, and market prices.
Real-time weather updates and pest/disease alerts.

Challenge

i. Smallholder farmers in Tanzania and much of Africa encounter various challenges that inhibit their productivity and economic viability:
ii. Limited Access to Timely and Accurate Agricultural Information: Farmers often lack the necessary knowledge regarding best practices, pest management, and crop protection techniques.
iii. Inadequate Market Access and Quality Inputs: Many farmers struggle to find reliable market platforms for selling crops and sources for quality agricultural inputs such as seeds and fertilizers.
iv. Insufficient Financial Services and Insurance: Access to financial products, including insurance and credit, is limited, which compounds the risks associated with farming.
v. Integration of Modern Technology: Traditional farming practices often clash with the adoption of modern technologies, creating barriers to efficiency and productivity enhancements needed for competitive farming.
