Idea

Kin WTE Joint-Venture is a waste-to-energy project in Kinshasa designed to transform the city’s municipal waste into clean, renewable electricity. Using pyrolysis and gasification, the plant will process 900 tons of plastic and solid waste per day to generate an average of 24 MW of power. This initiative not only creates a profitable business model with strong returns on investment but also contributes to green growth, sustainable development, and energy access for Kinshasa’s growing population.

Challenge

Kin WTE Joint-Venture addresses the pressing challenges of Kinshasa’s waste management crisis and limited access to energy. Currently, much of the city’s waste is burned, dumped illegally, or buried, leading to environmental hazards, public health risks, and low sanitation standards. At the same time, only about 60% of households have access to electricity, leaving many underserved. By tackling these issues simultaneously, the project creates a sustainable system that reduces pollution, improves health conditions, expands energy access, and advances the city’s progress toward the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Solution

Kin WTE Joint-Venture provides an integrated solution by establishing a modern gasification plant capable of converting large quantities of waste into usable energy. The project partners include NGOs, engineering firms, and international suppliers who will oversee the construction, operation, and maintenance of the facility. By producing reliable power for the grid, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and creating local green jobs, the joint venture positions itself as both a profitable enterprise and a driver of climate change mitigation in the region.
