Idea

JusCanna et Pâtisserie Joseph: Pioneering Sustainable Value Creation in Haiti’s Mango Sector is tackling the pressing challenges in Haiti’s mango industry, where nearly 50% of the nation’s valuable mango harvest—particularly the renowned Madame Francique variety—is lost annually due to spoilage, inadequate infrastructure, and limited processing capacity. Despite producing over 450,700 metric tons of mangoes each year and boasting more than 100 varieties, the country captures only a fraction of the potential value, with raw exports representing just 4% of production. Smallholder farmers, often owning fewer than 10 trees, receive as little as 3–5 US cents per export-quality mango, perpetuating rural poverty while the nation continues to import substantial quantities of fruit juice, draining foreign exchange.

Challenge

JusCanna et Pâtisserie Joseph: Pioneering Sustainable Value Creation in Haiti’s Mango Sector addresses multiple interlinked challenges: high post-harvest losses, chronic underutilization of agricultural resources, rural poverty, and the nation’s dependence on imported juices. The startup combats farmer income instability, limited value addition, and market access barriers by creating a consistent, fair-priced outlet for mangoes while simultaneously strengthening the supply chain in one of Haiti’s most important mango-growing regions. By turning a significant portion of wasted produce into high-value products, JusCanna not only advances food security and economic empowerment but also demonstrates how agro-industrial innovation can drive inclusive growth in Haiti.

Solution

JusCanna et Pâtisserie Joseph: Pioneering Sustainable Value Creation in Haiti’s Mango Sector offers an innovative, locally driven solution through the establishment of a modern mango processing plant in Maïssade, Centre Department. This state-of-the-art facility will feature advanced hygienic processing lines for pulp extraction, pasteurization, sterilization, and aseptic packaging, ensuring premium quality and shelf-stable mango juice. The company’s model centers on direct partnerships with smallholder farmers, offering fair prices, long-term contracts, and training to improve cultivation and post-harvest handling. By dramatically reducing waste, creating jobs, and building a strong presence in Haiti’s premium juice market, JusCanna is positioned to meet domestic demand and eventually tap into global export opportunities.
