Idea

Fondation Selemani Kitonda « FOSEKI » is a non-profit organization based in Uvira, Sud-Kivu, Democratic Republic of Congo, dedicated to improving access to education for marginalized girls. The foundation was established to fight illiteracy and social exclusion by ensuring that young girls, often orphans or from vulnerable families, can pursue schooling despite financial and cultural barriers. FOSEKI believes that educating girls is a powerful tool to uplift communities and break cycles of poverty.

Challenge

Fondation Selemani Kitonda « FOSEKI » is addressing the deep-rooted challenge of educational exclusion faced by marginalized girls in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Many families in Uvira and Fizi lack the financial means to pay school fees, leaving girls at high risk of illiteracy, early marriage, and poverty. Cultural perceptions further limit the value placed on girls’ education, while insecurity and weak institutional support exacerbate these conditions. FOSEKI steps in to fill this gap by championing the right to education and creating pathways for girls to overcome these barriers and secure a brighter future.

Solution

Fondation Selemani Kitonda « FOSEKI » is implementing the “Project of Assistance in the Schooling of Marginalized Girls,” which provides direct support to 830 girls in Uvira and Fizi territories. The initiative covers school fees, uniforms, supplies, and mentoring, while also engaging families and local authorities to ensure sustainable participation. Through this holistic approach, FOSEKI seeks not only to secure immediate access to education but also to build long-term opportunities for self-reliance and empowerment of young girls in the region.
