He obtained a B.Sc. Accounting from the University of Abuja, Gwagwalada, Nigeria. I am an Entrepreneur, in 2023, we set up FLY PROTEIN to be able to treat the biological waste in my community in Kaduna. It had so much fruit waste, like oranges and watermelon. So we got training on BSFL farming, and we started.

Idea

Fly Protein is an innovative Nigerian agritech company transforming organic waste into sustainable, high-quality insect protein. Founded by Emeka Daniel Umechukwu, an insect farmer and circular economy advocate, the company produces Black Soldier Fly Larvae (BSFL) protein as an eco-friendly and cost-effective alternative to fishmeal and soymeal. By converting biowaste into nutrient-rich protein and organic fertilizer, Fly Protein tackles food insecurity, pollution, and high feed costs—creating a scalable, climate-smart solution for the aquaculture, livestock, and pet food industries.

Challenge

Global food production is under immense pressure as the population races toward 10 billion by 2050. Traditional protein sources like fishmeal and soymeal are unsustainable—wild fish stocks are depleting, while soy cultivation drives deforestation and consumes vast land and water resources. Simultaneously, millions of tons of food, brewery grains, and animal manure end up in landfills, releasing methane—a greenhouse gas over 25 times more potent than CO₂. These challenges create a dual crisis: an escalating protein shortage and a worsening biowaste problem that threatens global food systems and the environment.

Solution

Fly Protein provides a sustainable alternative by using Black Soldier Fly Larvae (BSFL) to upcycle organic waste into high-protein feed ingredients and natural fertilizer. Through a proprietary process, the company produces BSFL protein concentrate (65–75% crude protein), BSFL oil, and frass fertilizer—delivering a complete circular economy model. The result is a renewable, locally sourced protein that replaces fishmeal and soymeal in aquafeed, livestock, and pet food, while significantly cutting methane emissions, conserving land and water, and supporting local farmers with affordable, nutrient-rich feed options.
