Idea

Fish Futura is a joint venture between African Bumbano and Kruse Research, focused on piloting a 0.5-hectare aquaculture system at Mzomsha Primary School. The company aims to tackle critical issues in South Africa, including food insecurity, unemployment among youth and women, and the lack of sustainable local fish production. By embedding aquaculture into school and community programs, Fish Futura envisions creating a replicable model that delivers both social and economic impact while generating commercial returns.

Challenge

Fish Futura is addressing the challenge of insufficient affordable protein for rural communities, high unemployment rates among youth and women, and the country’s dependence on imported fish. The startup leverages the opportunity to create localized, sustainable fish farming hubs that improve nutrition, generate jobs, and increase environmental literacy. By combining education, employment, and food security in a single model, Fish Futura targets a high-impact solution to long-standing social and economic gaps in South Africa.

Solution

Fish Futura is implementing a practical solution through its pilot pond, producing tilapia and catfish with an annual yield of approximately 5,000 kg. The model integrates hands-on training and job creation providing 10–15 positions per site and incorporates aquaculture education into the school curriculum. Revenue is generated by selling fish to local markets, restaurants, and aggregators, with scalability supported by centralized hatcheries and cold-chain logistics to enable expansion across multiple schools and communities.
