Idea

Fazenda Gilmar is addressing Angola’s critical food security issue, caused by the country's over-reliance on imported animal protein. With over 50% of Angola’s animal protein being imported, this dependency leads to a massive trade deficit and makes the nation vulnerable to disruptions in global supply chains. Moreover, currency fluctuations exacerbate the situation by directly impacting the cost of essential proteins, making them unaffordable for millions of consumers. Additionally, the lack of consistent, high-quality local production leaves a significant gap, which is currently filled by expensive and often lower-quality imports.

Challenge

Fazenda Gilmar is tackling multiple challenges, including high import reliance, price volatility, and market gaps in local food production. By substituting low-quality imports with premium local options, the farm capitalizes on the growing urban demand for fresh, local produce. Government support through initiatives like PLANAGRÃO encourages local production, creating a promising opportunity for import substitution. Fazenda Gilmar’s strategic location, modern infrastructure, and scalable model position it for rapid expansion to meet Angola's increasing demand for sustainable, high-quality agricultural products.

Solution

Fazenda Gilmar offers a comprehensive solution through a circular economy model that integrates crop cultivation, feed processing, livestock rearing, and waste recycling. The farm focuses on growing maize and cassava as the foundation of its production, followed by converting these crops into high-quality animal feed on-site. By raising poultry, swine, and goats with optimized nutrition, Fazenda Gilmar ensures healthy livestock. Furthermore, the farm recycles animal waste into organic fertilizer for the crops. This vertical integration approach reduces operational costs by up to 60% while ensuring 100% sustainability in production.
