Idea

Dimu is a financial technology startup focused on expanding access to digital financial services in Malawi, where a significant portion of the population remains unbanked despite the banking sector contributing substantially to national GDP. With only a minority of citizens actively using bank cards or mobile money and limited penetration of formal payment infrastructure Dimu is positioned to monetize the gap between low banking access and growing demand for digital transactions. The company intends to generate revenue by facilitating money transfers, bill payments, subscriptions, deposits, withdrawals, and credit-related services through a distributed agent-based kiosk network that integrates with banks, mobile operators, and other commercial institutions.

Challenge

Dimu is addressing structural financial exclusion in Malawi, where limited access to banking equipment and transaction points has left a large share of the population unbankable. Although digital payments are increasing globally, Malawi’s banking penetration remains below global and continental averages, and only a small percentage of transactions are conducted monthly through formal payment services. The lack of accessible transaction infrastructure such as card-enabled terminals and integrated payment kiosks restricts adoption of bank cards and mobile money. By deploying localized, agent-operated kiosks and integrating credit card network services, Dimu directly tackles infrastructure scarcity, low financial inclusion, and limited transaction accessibility that constrain economic participation.

Solution

Dimu offers a decentralized payment and financial services platform delivered through independent service kiosks operated by agents and deployed in high-traffic community locations such as shops, markets, petrol stations, and community centers. The platform enables transactions including transfers to mobile wallets, bank accounts, and money transfer companies; payment of utilities, city rates, examination fees, and phone bills; subscription payments; ticket purchases; betting services; and financial services such as deposits, withdrawals, and credit facilitation. By connecting with commercial banks, insurance firms, and microfinance institutions, Dimu creates an interoperable ecosystem that extends formal financial services to underserved populations through accessible physical infrastructure.
