Delta Farms is a vertically integrated livestock farming, feedlot, and premium meat distribution business based in Maun, Botswana, established to supply consistently high-quality beef, lamb, and, in later phases, Wagyu products to the tourism, hospitality, and retail markets. The company builds on decades of hands-on farming and meat-market experience, combined with strong local and tourism-industry relationships, to recreate a trusted, locally produced meat brand. By controlling the value chain from fodder production and feedlot operations through to slaughter, aging, and retail distribution, Delta Farms Botswana aims to close a significant quality and supply gap in Botswana’s primary tourism hub.

Challenge

Delta Farms is addressing structural challenges in Botswana’s meat supply chain, including limited availability of quality slaughter cattle, the absence of proper meat aging practices, high feed costs, and severe import restrictions caused by recurring Foot and Mouth disease outbreaks in the region. These constraints have resulted in inconsistent supply, compromised meat quality, and sustained pressure on the few butcheries serving Maun’s tourism and hospitality sectors. In addition, limited local fodder production and insufficient land scale restrict producers’ ability to grow efficiently. By securing water-abundant farmland near the Okavango Delta, implementing cost-efficient feeding systems, and expanding land capacity to support feedlot and meat-market operations, Delta Farms Botswana directly resolves these bottlenecks while supporting national food security and aligning with government and Botswana Meat Commission priorities.

Solution

Delta Farms is solving market inefficiencies through a fully integrated production and supply model that guarantees consistent volumes, proper meat aging, and premium quality standards currently lacking in the local market. The business will procure cattle directly from regional producers, operate its own feedlot supported by low-cost fodder systems such as Super Napier grass and hydroponic feed, and distribute products via a dedicated meat market, direct supply agreements with safari lodges, and online pre-orders for self-drive tourists. In its second year, the introduction of Wagyu and Akaushi cattle from established, acclimatized bloodlines will further differentiate Delta Farms Botswana and position it as the premium meat supplier for lodges, safari operators, and selected supermarkets in Maun.

Delta Farms and FasterCapital today announced a strategic partnership through FasterCapital’s Equitypilot program to accelerate Delta Farms’ feedlot, Wagyu cross-breeding and irrigated fresh-produce operations in the Okavango region. The collaboration combines Delta’s local production plan and market relationships with FasterCapital’s funding, mentorship and go-to-market resources to address urgent regional beef and vegetable shortages.

Market opportunity & problem statement

Regional supply shocks prompted by South Africa’s livestock and fruit-health restrictions and constrained communal grazing have created acute demand for high-quality beef, lamb and fresh produce in northern Botswana. With an estimated national herd near 1.8–2.0 million head and roughly 180 high-end safari lodges near the Okavango, procurement pain points and import limits present a scalable white space for local, irrigated feedlot and vegetable production. Delta targets both institutional buyers (lodges, hotels, supermarkets) and tourist retail channels underserved by current suppliers.

Startup solution & differentiation

Delta Farms will develop a purpose-built feedlot and irrigated cropping system in Komana using Okavango groundwater, three 508,000 L reservoirs, movable flatpipe irrigation and conventional pivots for tall feed crops. Core offerings include grain-fed feedlot beef, a premium Wagyu-cross range sourced through regional breeders, lamb production, and fast-turn crops such as True Potato Seed (TPS) and tomatoes. Delta’s advantages: secured lodge procurement relationships, integrated upstream feed production, rapid vegetable harvest cycles (3 months), and an on-site meat market in Maun. Early commercial validation includes repeat frozen beef sales to tourists and distributor interest for TPS in Botswana.

Growth trajectory & next steps

Near-term priorities: complete boreholes and reservoirs, plant initial 5–10 HA TPS and vegetables, and establish quarantine and feedlot facilities. Medium-term: expand the core herd to produce 550–600 feedlot head annually and launch the Maun Executive Meat Market. Delta plans a phased capital raise to support full build-out and scaling to 1,000 producing head within five years.
