Idea

Cemaki is a non-profit, apolitical organization of Kimbanguist persuasion founded to respond to the social and humanitarian needs of children in difficult circumstances in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Established on July 2, 1999, in Kitsaku/Zimba by Mr. Dieudonné Malungani Luiba and operating under Congolese Law No. 004/2001, Cemaki was created with the core mission of providing temporary and permanent care to vulnerable children, particularly young orphans who have been abandoned. From its headquarters in Kitsaku and through a network of relay centers nationally and internationally, the organization seeks to restore dignity, protection, and opportunity to children at risk.

Challenge

Cemaki is addressing the growing gap between the rising number of vulnerable children requiring assistance and the limited financial and material resources available to support them. The expansion of care sites and increasing school enrollment have significantly amplified needs related to education costs, teacher support, healthcare, transportation, housing, and daily living expenses. Operating largely on volunteer funding and small-scale agricultural income, Cemaki faces ongoing challenges in ensuring sustainability, scaling its impact, and maintaining quality services while responding to persistent poverty, child abandonment, and structural vulnerabilities affecting children in rural and underserved regions of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Solution

Cemaki is implementing an integrated care model that combines accommodation, education, nutrition, healthcare, and psychosocial support for vulnerable children across three operational sites Kitsaku, Kitsuka, and Kibuatu with a total hosting capacity of 98 children. The organization directly manages educational infrastructure, including a primary school (CRS/ZIMBA) and a secondary school complex (S.C–Cemaki), ensuring continuity of schooling from primary through high school. To sustain its operations, Cemaki relies on community-based, family-run agriculture and volunteer contributions, notably establishing itself as a recognized producer of paddy rice in Kongo Central, which supports both food security and financial resilience.
