Idea

Canrose Uganda Ltd is a pioneering agricultural company focused on transitioning from small-scale to large-scale farming, with a primary focus on the cultivation of high-value crops, especially T-Hybrid roses. The company was founded in January 1999 as a family initiative and has since conducted successful pilot projects that demonstrated the potential of the Ugandan climate and soil for commercial flower production. The company’s goal is to scale its operations in four phases, expanding from an initial 2 hectares to over 13 hectares, capitalizing on Uganda’s favorable climate to produce high-quality flowers for both local and international markets.

Challenge

Canrose Uganda Ltd is addressing several critical challenges in Uganda's agricultural sector, including the need for modern, efficient farming practices, limited market access for smallholder farmers, and underutilized agricultural potential. The project will help alleviate poverty and improve livelihoods by increasing household incomes through commercial farming of high-value crops. Additionally, it will create employment opportunities for youth and women, thereby contributing to social development. The company is also committed to environmental sustainability, employing climate-resilient greenhouse technologies and efficient irrigation systems to mitigate the risks of climate change and ensure long-term viability of the business.

Solution

Canrose Uganda Ltd plans to implement a sustainable, modern farming model for the production of T-Hybrid roses and carnations, using advanced agricultural techniques and environmentally friendly practices. With a strong technical partnership with Etza Agriculture, an Israeli company specializing in horticulture, the company will receive expert training, market access, and advanced farming methodologies. The project is designed to generate substantial economic impact, including the creation of 5,000 jobs, substantial foreign exchange earnings, and local economic stimulation. By targeting local, regional, and international markets—particularly in Europe and the Middle East—Canrose aims to meet growing demand for high-quality cut flowers while supporting the agricultural development of Uganda.
