Idea

Aquamboa is a 2.3-hectare integrated agroecological farm designed to operate as a closed-loop, circular ecosystem. It combines aquaculture, poultry, pig farming, insect rearing, market gardening, and renewable energy production. The aim is to maximize productivity while minimizing waste by ensuring that outputs from one activity become inputs for another. At the center of Aquamboa’s model are efficient recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) for catfish and shrimp, in-house insect protein production, and water-efficient vegetable farming, all managed with ecological and economic resilience in mind.

Challenge

Aquamboa is purpose-built to address some of the most pressing challenges in modern farming: dependence on expensive imported feed, unreliable rural energy, underutilization of agricultural waste, and inefficient water use. By integrating diverse production streams within a circular model, Aquamboa reduces input costs, strengthens supply chain security, and lowers its environmental footprint. The model is tailored to meet strict agroecological standards, positioning the farm for premium markets and regional expansion, while contributing to a more resilient and sustainable food system.

Solution

Aquamboa is a scalable and sustainable solution to key agricultural constraints in feed, energy, and waste management. It uses advanced RAS technology for aquaculture, deep litter fermentation systems in poultry housing, and a multi-stage anaerobic biodigester that transforms animal and crop waste into biogas and organic fertilizer. With solar and biogas-powered energy systems, plus a connected farm management platform for real-time monitoring and traceability, Aquamboa produces much of its own protein and energy—drastically lowering costs while ensuring operational autonomy and stability.
