Idea

Agropecuaria Setenta Cuarenta y Ocho Sa is developing an innovative waste-to-energy initiative that aims to transform the way municipal solid waste is managed in Costa Rica. The core idea is to process waste in an integrated manner—separating recyclable fractions and converting the combustible portion into synthesis gas (SYNGAS). This approach not only increases recycling rates but also generates clean electricity and reduces the amount of waste requiring final disposal by up to 95%.

Challenge

Agropecuaria Setenta Cuarenta y Ocho Sa is addressing several critical challenges linked to waste management and energy production. These include reducing reliance on distant landfills, ensuring consistent and quality waste supply, overcoming public resistance to waste facilities, and navigating regulatory and economic uncertainties in Costa Rica. By combining transparent community engagement, modern environmental safeguards, and strategic partnerships with municipalities and energy distributors, the company seeks to mitigate risks while creating lasting environmental and social benefits.

Solution

Agropecuaria Setenta Cuarenta y Ocho Sa is providing a sustainable solution through the León Cortés Waste to Energy Project. The project will modernize waste management in the Zona de los Santos region, where most municipal waste is currently transported long distances to landfills. By implementing advanced technology and efficient operations, the company will create a local system that minimizes environmental impact, lowers costs for municipalities, and generates renewable energy from what was previously discarded.
